Are gold watches classy?

There is a widespread belief that a gold watch has to be eye-catching, but this is simply not the case. Ultimately, it all comes down to the design of the watch.

Gold watches

are like any other watch; some of them are too “in your face” and others are conservative and sophisticated. In general, gold watches are considered more elegant and classy than those made of stainless steel.

That said, gold watches are more closely associated with dress watches. If you dress smart, then you'll also want a watch that goes with that. This version, made in a numbered edition, has a case made of beige gold owned by Chanel, which is less “brassed” than yellow gold and celebrates the third color, after black and white, in which the house is built. The higher the purity of gold (24 karat gold is the purest, but we'll talk about this later), the softer it will be.

In its simplest form, the watch has a large dial with three hands in the center and a date window at three o'clock. The watch face features gold-tone indexes, numerals, hour and minute hands and a tone-on-tone seconds hand. While the coronavirus crisis is causing the value of so many investments to plummet, the price of gold has reached a seven-year high, as investors seek a “safe haven that is immune to the devastation that a global pandemic can inflict. Men's gold watches are surprisingly versatile, but overall, a thinner and more refined watch works best with a thin, buttoned look, while thicker ones work better with out-of-order settings.

If, on the other hand, you come to the conclusion that a gold watch is appropriate, then go ahead and opt for a gold watch. Despite the very traditional exterior finish, inside the case it surpasses an automatic movement that incorporates the best of old and new, including a golden oscillating weight and Breguet's state-of-the-art silicone balance spring. Being so soft means it's not normally used for watches, most brands opt for a more robust 18 carat option. So it's great to see a big watch brand like Chopard embrace ethically sourced gold through fairmined, a gold standard that ensures that the people who mine the gold and the places it comes from are treated fairly.

Encased in jet black ceramic with a black alligator leather and rubber strap, each watch has a unique dial, with a pattern created by subjecting the gold scales to extreme heat. So as long as you're not a retailer of old watches trying to pass them off as real 18 carats, wear it with pride and with the satisfaction that it hasn't cost you the land. Sophisticated, elegant and timeless, this watch is a definite purchase for anyone who appreciates classics.
